Picasso once said, “Youth has no age.” At Milwaukee Harley-Davidson, we’d beg to differ in the case of The Pinewood Derby. For all you men and women out there who have taken it upon yourselves to build a Pinewood Derby car for your nine year-old son or nephew, we are talking to you. The Pinewood Derby is a Cub Scout “rite of passage,” an event originally created to promote bonding and camaraderie between scouts and parents. Just so we’re clear, all you fully-grown Pinewood ego-maniacs, youth ends at about the age of 18.
Parents and other adult mentors have been building kids’ cars since the first Pinewood Derby. Everyone knows it, and we are brave enough to say it. We aren’t stupid- we know it’s been going on for years. Feel guilty yet?
Milwaukee Harley-Davidson is giving you grown-ups the chance to do what you have already been doing for years, except guilt-free this time. Finally, credit will be given where credit is due- however pathetic. Get this out of your system now, while it is socially-acceptable…Come one, come all to “The Adult Derby.”
And please, feel free to continue building your kids’ solar system projects and nature dioramas, and writing their papers on US Presidents. And by all means, continue letting your son’s pee wee football stats dictate your mood on a Saturday afternoon. Hey, even continue to force your sons and daughters into joining your favorite clubs and teams, for which they have zero interest.
But, from here on out, leave The Pinewood Derby to the kids.
